I’ve said some negative things about Rolex. I think they act really slow, haven’t innovated much lately, and play it too safe. Regardless, Rolex has a few powerful classic designs under its belt. The two major ones for me are the Submariner lines, and the Daytona. Speaking of the Daytona,fake omega, I understand that it is one of the most desirable watches on the planet from a demand standpoint, meaning more people want one, that can get one. Rolex has taken this opportunity to increase the prices dramatically. Meaning you can’t really get one for under $10k. Steep.

Well what do you do when you want a something like a Daytona, but can’t afford or get one. Sure there are legions of “imitations” that are simple low cost alternatives or play out fakes, but you aren’t that type of person? You like the style, but you want something nice you can be proud of on your wrist. For me, this is a totally logical approach to satisfying a need. Others feel that if you can’t afford a Rolex, you don’t deserve to wear the style. Well let those stop here, and the rest of you can keep reading.

Marcello C. is a great German brand, that I love to talk about. I own four of their watches at the moment, and have been extremely satisfied with my ownership experience. One watch I’ve been curious about is their Senatore. A Rolex Daytona inspired watch, that certainly has a lot of Marcello C. in it. You’ll notice a lot of their limited edition Titanium Tridente diver watch in the Senatore (large 12, and the hands). There is also a wonderfully cohesive look that takes the Daytona style, and moves is a different, dare I say Teutonic, direction. My model of choice is the Marcello C. Senatore 2020.4, made in the color scheme of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. The black face with the red trim is snazzy. The tri-compax layout of the chronograph dials, never had a more flattering frame, and the red arrow tipped seconds counter hand for the chronograph fits nicely in place. Marcello C. uses a Valjoux 7750 automatic movement which is about as trusted a movement as you can get.

An interesting thing about the Senatore is bracelet with the wide middle link. I’d love to see how this looks, but I have a feeling it gives the watch a really impressive look on your wrist. The bracelet is 22mm wide, while the case is 42.5mm wide. I am not sure how I feel about the see-through caseback window being mineral glass, but the crystal on the face is sapphire of course. This watch actually represents the most expensive, non-precious metal watch that Marcello C. makes. At a current price of over $3,600, it is several times more than Marcello C. largest saleer, the sub $1000 Nettuno 3. You do have to consider the price of a Rolex Daytona too, and the fact that a Marcello C. is a finely made watch, with little comparison.

The Marcello C. Senatore 2020.4 is only sold in Europe,breitling watches, but other Senatore models are offered in the US. I’d love to get my hands on one of these watches, and if I do, you’ll hear all about it.

Last year at Baselworld Universal Geneve presented its Cabriolet watch with the new UG 101 movement. Important to the movement was its use of a micro rotor used to automatically wind the movement (Universal Geneve calls it the “Microtor”). Micro rotors are nothing new, but have traditionally stayed far away from “reasonably priced” watches. I am not saying the Microtor watch is going to be Seiko prices, but it certainly will be within the range of “I could save up for that.” While last year’s Cabriolet was more of a unique watch with a square flip around case, this year’s Microtor is a lot more sober of a looker.

Micro rotors are meant to do one thing only really. Provide the convenience of an automatic winding movement without blocking the view of the movement too much. Traditional rotors cover about half of the movement’s surface. So if you have a exhibition caseback,rolex watches, you can’t see the entire, decorated image that the watch maker wants you to see if you have a standard automatic watch. With a micro rotor, you can shrink the size of the oscillating weight,breitling watches, place it off-center, and reveal a lot more of the decorated movement. It is really the best of both worlds. An engineering complexity with micro rotors has always been weight. You need to make them heavy enough to spin around sufficiently to keep the watch wound. For this reason watch makers have typically employed denser metals for the rotor. You can see in the images that Universal Geneve chose gold (heavier than steel) for this purpose (which is common). The heavy metal platinum is also often used for these purposes, and is sometimes combined with the use of gold. The rotor is also very thick, and set deep into the movement. Again, this is to ensure the maximum possible weight for the rotor so that it oscillates frequently and with ease.

The efforts in the Microtor watch succeed in giving it a 42 hour power reserve which is on par with normally sized automatic movement rotors. The watch itself is an acceptable 41mm wide in steel, with sapphire front and rear crystals. The dials are beautifully done in either white or black enamel. Fancy! You can also get the watches on a leather strap if the metal bracelet is too sporty for you given the formal look of the dial. Which is really the appeal of this watch. Nothing to crazy for Universal Geneve. Just a really handsome looking, classic look, with an important piece of movement tech to keep the owner gleeful each time they show off the watch. Water resistance is 50 meters.

You don’t see Universal Geneve watches in the US to often, but they are pretty common in Europe. I was surprised to see a number of them being sold when I was in Germany. So if you don’t see them for sale in the US, you merely need to take a trip online. Wait, you are already there. These Microtor watches by Universal Geneve are going to be officially launched at Baselworld 2009 in April,montblanc watches, so wait until then if you can’t bear to live without one.

How cool is this new Diving Tool watch from Rama Swiss Watch (RSW)? The wildly functional yet avant garde “instrument” watch seems totally plausible to wear, yet nothing else like it exists. The case is mostly square, with an functional, but cool, looking round rotating bezel over the dial. I like to totally horizontal orientation of the crowns and pushers as well – nice design cue. The first few seconds of looking at the watch you’ll be a bit distracted by the novel look. Then you’ll appreciate just how usable the watch is. Really nothing that crazy about the design in terms of utility.

From a diver’s perspective the watch has everything in the right place. 300 meters of water resistance plus the rotating bezel and bright lume covered dial make for an good underwater tool. The large dot hour markers have been cleverly enhanced with a vertical stripe that I feel actually makes the watch easier to read. It also makes the hour markers look like screws. The hands of the watch are very purposeful in their form. I’d say that they might look to be too large for the chronograph subdials, but I don’t really think that is the case, as they look easily readable. Actually you aren’t going to be using the chronograph underwater really anyways. The watch comes with two finished and three dial colors. There is the steel version and the PVD coated steel. Honestly both look really sweet. Two black faces are offered with either naked lume or orange colored hands and markers, while a metallic blue dial is also offered. I can’t pledge preference for either as they are all nice to look at in all honestly.

Inside the watch are two movement options. The 4050 series Diving tool has ETA Valjoux 7753 automatic movements in a tri-compax orientation, and the 7050 series is a three hand watch with an automatic ETA 2824-2 movement inside. Doesn’t it sounds like the Reference numbers should be switched? I.e. 7050 series for the chronograph watches? Maybe the press release has a mistake – as that has been known to happen. The size of the watches is large, but not crazy big at 46.20 mm wide and 16.45mm thick. The height of the watch is 53.60mm from lug tip to lug tip. Of course the crystal is sapphire, and the build quality is going to be good. The strap is available in rubber or black or brown alligator – with matching buckles to the case (steel or PVD).

Cost is actually going to be pretty reasonable given the style of the watch. Sure lots of beautiful and lust worthy diving watches come out that cost over $10,000. No specific price has been released yet,audemars piguet, but I would image the RSW Diving Tool to cost between $4,breitling watches,000 – $8,000.

Mourning was pretty much a quiet affair until Queen Victoria lost her beloved Albert in 1861. Plunging into a public and prolonged mourning period, Victoria created a new level of formal mourning.

In the Victorian era, mourning became a ritual with strict rules, including standards for attire dictating that women wear black crepe clothing (widow’s weeds) and jet jewelry. Social rules extended to hair accessories, umbrellas,breitling watches, fans, socialization, behavior and more.

Locks of hair from the deceased were woven into sentimental jewelry, including bracelets, brooches, necklaces and earrings with gold fittings. Hair, often plaited, was mounted onto gold and black enamel rings.

I think that just posting the images of this special one-off watch probably says enough. What else can I say? An intensely decorated movement made to look like an underwater scene. Not just that, but the actually movement itself is made to look like the sea floor. Simply amazing. The best part is that this is not just some concept or a piece of art. This will be placed in a real working watch. But probably just one. This movement is called the ImmenSEAty (clever right) and was created by young watchmaker Gabriel Salgado de Arce. This watch was part of a project at the Confrerie Horlogere, which is a new arm of BNB Concept. I don’t know a lot about this new part of BNB Concept. Their website is still new and wasn’t totally live the last time I checked. It has something to do with young watchmakers, though the video below tells you more. The early output from the Confrerie Horlogere has been impressive though, but this ocean themed movement is my favorite. One of the most amazing aspects of the movement is the level of micro detail. Almost every square millimeter is covered with engravings and decoration. Whether it is a small sea star or shark, you can’t help but pay close attention to each scene on the surface. I can’t wait to see what the front of the watch will look like. While it is hard to tell, the movement is a tourbillion with a few interesting complications. In addition to showing the time on Earth, the watch shows the time of three other planets; Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn. Of course these planets do not have 24 hour days, so the time is amended for them. I look forward to seeing how this is displayed. The watch also has a power reserve indicator and is (of course) manually wound.

Something about the fact that the dial itself will show time on other planets leads me to believe it is possible that the face of the watch will not necessarily be benthic in theme. Perhaps the movement is considered the ocean, while the face is akin to the sky. We will have to wait for more images before coming to more conclusions about the watch. The watch’s power reserve is read off a 120° sectoral indicator positioned between 8 and 9 o’clock on the dial.”
One of the cooler things to realize is what comes with the watch. First, the watch has a lifetime warrant (oh trust me,breitling watches, you’ll pay for it). Second, the watch box is a full fledged display case. It even comes with a digital camera which is able to capture macro images of the movement’s small details and project them on a built in screen! Pretty cool. Also, like all watches from the Confrerie de Horlogere,armani, it is 100% Swiss made (parts and labor). Not sure what the cost is for this one of kind wunder-watch, but I am sure it is already sold. I will add pics of the watch itself as they become available.
