I have always been a fan of the Clipper line. The new for 2008 Hermes Clipper H1 200m Diver has a name that makes it blend in with the other models, but is really something new and must more interesting.

The first thing you’ll notice is the new dial and big date. The “H” pattern on the dial is typical of Hermes’ use of the letter “H,” and makes for a really nice sporty effect. This is one of the most understated “big dates” that I have seen. Nicely done in the lower section of the case with a white on black coloring. Retained is the sloped chapter ring to enhance legibility, and the numbers are raised with what looks to be a welcome amount of lume.

The case and bezel have always been the star of the show to me. They are equally well done here with the many screws and “plate” effect. Relief numerals on the bezel look crisp and nice to the touch. Always riding on the tail of the Rolex Yachtmaster. I really just want to take the bezel for a “test spin.” Honestly, I don’t even really care about Hermes as a fashion maker. Granted, they aren’t exactly focused on the male market that much, with their scarves and all, but the new Clipper Diver 200m is proof that they can make a well balanced men’s watch that combines sportiness and style well.

The best part is the size. While I enjoyed previous Clipper watches, to me, they were always a bit small, petite even. With the 2008 Clipper Diver, size is up to 43.5mm. Suddenly I am more excited and take the watch all that much more seriously. Inside is a automatic Hermes Cal. H1. Hermes does not make movements, so this is probably an Hermes branded ETA 2892-2 or something similar. UPDATE: I recently learned that the H1 movement inside of this watch is the first in-house movement for Hermes. Actually that is a bit of a misnomer, because it is an in-house movement made exclusively for Hermes by Vaucher, but not by Hermes. The H1 movement is a double barreled movement with a power reserve of 50 hours, and uses ceramic ball bearings for the rotor that winds the movement. These ceramic ball bearings don’t require lubricant. The case back as a sapphire window for seeing the movement.

Hermes would be offering a stellar package if the leather strap was used the high quality Hermes leather. Not sure about this, but it is entirely possible. The strap also uses a nicely polished steel deployment rather than mere buckle. There are actually two straps (leather or alligator) offered and a steel bracelet. So here you have it, a great offering from Hermes in the form of a new diving watch. Really subtle good looks on an impressive watch fit for a fashionista, or otherwise.

One can always expect beautiful artistic watch creations from Van Cleef & Arpels each year at SIHH. Not that any of the watches are affordable to the lay person. For examples these models are all in platinum. They are highly primed for visual appreciation. Of the 2010’s new collections from Van Cleef & Arpels is the Midnight Extraordinary Series. I don’t know exactly how models there are. But here are three from the main California Landscapes collection, and two below from the Midnight Extraordinary Japanese Lacquer series.

I am most interested in the California Landscapes series, likely because I live in California. It is true that not all the scenes are at night (in contrast to the “midnight” part of the name), but each are interesting feats of talent. Instead of just enamel on dial paintings, the landscapes are done with some enamel work, but also a mosaic of jewels and stones. I have not the talent to indicate what stones have been used (that would be like being able to reserve engineer floats in the Rose Parade) but here are each landscape depicted in the series (only three of them or shown here). We have the natural looks of Big Spring, Apache Terraces, Turquoise Canyon, Granite Peak and White Creek, all places in California – a few of which I’ve never heard of. Still,bvlgari watches, I can recognize the look of the land as I have been through some of it.

The watch cases are all in 42mm wide platinum. Very heavy and expensive I am sure. Inside the watches are Van Cleef & Arpels Caliber 800P automatic movements. There is additional art work on the rear of the watches that is engraved. The straps are black alligator. The collection comes in a limited edition of 8 pieces per scene.

You then have the thematically similar Midnight Extraordinary Japanese Lacquer Series models. Also in limited editions of 8 piece per model, these continue the “midnight” dark tones with classic Japanese scene imagery. I do think that the reason the collection is called “Midnight” is because most Van Cleef & Arpels watches that I have seen display vivid bright colors – mostly feminine. These watches are most masculine in demeanor.

The Japanese Lacquer models also have five versions. The two pictured ones have rich variety of mocha browns and other tones common in traditional Japanese art work. Van Cleef & Arpels used five works from master artist Hakose San. Each faithfully re-visioned for use on a watch dial. These models also have 42mm wide platinum cases and contain automatic Caliber 800P movements. Each of the watches in the Midnight Extraordinary series aren’t the easiest to read in terms of the time, but these are really art watches, meant to show off the dials and display the time in more of a secondary way. I’ll try to get more images of these obvious beauties soon.

A face like this is designed to be easy to read, which it is. That is what you need to remember if you think it appears to spartan. Another area that I am curious about experimentation is the size of the hands. I like the shape of the hands, but they could use a bit of a size increase to compliment the diameter of the dial. Still, they don’t really negatively impact your ability to read the watch. I would have also liked to see lume on the dial or hands – but they again IWC doesn’t do this most of the time either. From a style perspective, a watch like this is certainly a step up from analog Timex timepieces out there you saw being worn a lot. Also, the case is water resistant to 50 meters and the crystal is mineral.

The big steel watch case is not as heavy as you would think, so no worries about weight. It has a very rich mirror polish finishing on it,armani, with a thinner bezel to give the face a bolder presence. The dial color is a matte silvery white tone, with applied hour indexes and Arabic numerals. There is also a ring around the periphery of the bezel that is classic in design origin. There is a centrally located date window as well – I like the angled beveling on the window that gives it a much finer look. Often times basic rectangular holes on a dial look cheap, but that is not an issue here. Jorg Gray might want to experiment with larger date windows in future designs. I am curious what that would look like on a large watch like this.

Inside the watch is a solid Japanese quartz movement. Nothing you’d have to worry about, pretty much ever unless you need to put a battery in it. The watch is big enough that you can rest it on your desk while you work and use it as a clock. Most people (including myself) who type a lot take off their watches while they work). Just don’t be one of those people who forget it on your desk (unless you are at home). There really isn’t a lot to elaborate on with a very straight forward and easy to live with watch like this JR1060. You know what it does right away, you don’t need to think very hard when using it, and the large,montblanc watches, but traditional style of the watch goes with just about every outfit that a brown strap would go with. Price is really reasonable as well at $295 – available direct from Jorg Gray, or one of their authorized dealers.

Please be aware right now that this is a watch best suited to larger wrists. For one thing, the strap is pretty large, even at the smallest hole, the strap is for at least medium to large wrists. The attractive leather strap with the reptile print embossing and honey brown color is comfy and nice to look at. It has a steel push-button butterfly deployment clasp with a nice Jorg Gray signature on it. If the strap is too large on you, it should be possible to make another hole in the strap with an awl (for those of you who know what you are doing, otherwise take it to a pro).

Have you ever been interested in an IWC Portuguese watch but couldn’t afford it, or didn’t want to spend the money on it? For many people, this superb classic is the epitome of luxury and style, but sometimes it is too much luxury. There are actually not too many similar watches out there (especially when it comes to the non-chronograph versions). So it is a good thing that Jorg Gray thankfully steps in to this niche with the JG1060 line of watches. The  collection has a few varieties, and this pictured version is the Jorg Gray JG1060-20. For lovers of large watch out there who want something more classic in style – this is an ideal choice. The JG1060 watch is a massive 48mm wide! Really nice and big on your wrist. Other versions of the JG1060 range has different colors or slightly different dial designs – all IWC homages.

I think that just posting the images of this special one-off watch probably says enough. What else can I say? An intensely decorated movement made to look like an underwater scene. Not just that, but the actually movement itself is made to look like the sea floor. Simply amazing. The best part is that this is not just some concept or a piece of art. This will be placed in a real working watch. But probably just one. This movement is called the ImmenSEAty (clever right) and was created by young watchmaker Gabriel Salgado de Arce. This watch was part of a project at the Confrerie Horlogere, which is a new arm of BNB Concept. I don’t know a lot about this new part of BNB Concept. Their website is still new and wasn’t totally live the last time I checked. It has something to do with young watchmakers, though the video below tells you more. The early output from the Confrerie Horlogere has been impressive though, but this ocean themed movement is my favorite. One of the most amazing aspects of the movement is the level of micro detail. Almost every square millimeter is covered with engravings and decoration. Whether it is a small sea star or shark, you can’t help but pay close attention to each scene on the surface. I can’t wait to see what the front of the watch will look like. While it is hard to tell, the movement is a tourbillion with a few interesting complications. In addition to showing the time on Earth, the watch shows the time of three other planets; Uranus, Neptune, and Saturn. Of course these planets do not have 24 hour days, so the time is amended for them. I look forward to seeing how this is displayed. The watch also has a power reserve indicator and is (of course) manually wound.

Something about the fact that the dial itself will show time on other planets leads me to believe it is possible that the face of the watch will not necessarily be benthic in theme. Perhaps the movement is considered the ocean, while the face is akin to the sky. We will have to wait for more images before coming to more conclusions about the watch. Here are some words from the watchmaker:
“When I look down I see the ocean depths. When I look up I see the expanse of the universe”, he says, referring to the parallel dimension of his art and character. The sea and the sky do in fact come together in “ImmenSEAty”. Its glare-proofed sapphire crystal reveals an expanse of sea as well as various unexpected indications. Along with the centrally positioned hours and minutes on Earth, the watch shows the time on Neptune, Uranus and Saturn on individual subdials arrayed on the upper part of the main dial. For the record, please note that a day on Saturn lasts 10.656 hours, on Uranus 17.24 hours and on Neptune 16.11 hours. ImmenSEAty” comes with a hand-wound mechanical movement that provides five days of power reserve. It features a flying tourbillon, i.e. one with suspended carriage, at 6 o’clock, that includes a Swiss lever escapement and a construction allowing the carriage to rotate in exactly one minute without resorting to ball bearings. The watch’s power reserve is read off a 120° sectoral indicator positioned between 8 and 9 o’clock on the dial.”
One of the cooler things to realize is what comes with the watch. First, the watch has a lifetime warrant (oh trust me,breitling watches, you’ll pay for it). Second, the watch box is a full fledged display case. It even comes with a digital camera which is able to capture macro images of the movement’s small details and project them on a built in screen! Pretty cool. Also, like all watches from the Confrerie de Horlogere,armani, it is 100% Swiss made (parts and labor). Not sure what the cost is for this one of kind wunder-watch, but I am sure it is already sold. I will add pics of the watch itself as they become available.
